Let’s bring it back to the basics…

PROCESS THIS!

I recently shot a job that required me to research mannequins....

I recently shot a job that required me to research mannequins. The job was simple - white mannequin on white background, with dresses on it. Well as you all know, once you get something in your head as simple as a mannequin, you start to see it all over, and cant get away from it.

How many times a day do you see mannequins in an average day? Bet its lots more than you realize! Anyway, I got inspired and shot a series of images of mannequins. There is something wonderful and alive about them….

This is what resulted……….

It’s always fun shooting with Alan as well as rewarding....

It’s always fun shooting with Alan as well as rewarding. Always get great shots for him and for me. We shot two sets of clothes from Craig Robinson and a leather kilt from Douglas Ferguson @ Frock in NYC. The leather and chain outfit seemed to intrigue Alan the most… we only have about 5 mins before he had to leave for another appointment, and he turned it on with all that leather on him! Fun but he really knew how to move for the camera…..The serious and professional side of Alan Cumming got us the shots we were looking to achieve…. all and all, a great day - a fun day…. they should all be like this!

The out takes are as much fun as the final picks - Alan has no...

The out takes are as much fun as the final picks - Alan has no trouble entertaining himself and us while we tweak lighting and go thru wardrobe changes… I can only imagine him on the set of one of my favorite tv series - “The Good Wife” Those would be awesome out takes…. He has many faces - enjoy them!!

Today’s blog is going to be about the fun that happens on...

Today’s blog is going to be about the fun that happens on a set. I have shot Alan Cumming now for the third time. Each time we shoot the concepts are completely different - First time we shot him as the Scotsman he is… Plaids and kilts, second time we shot him as the 19th century photographer Mathew Brady. This last shoot was more clean cut and Mad Men like. -with suits from Craig Robinson - we still added a touch of his heritage with a slight plaid like pattern. Here we have some production stills from the shoot- and I think Alan is having the most fun! Alan is always a pleasure to work with. Always comes in with great stories and and awesome attitude.

CELEBRITY CHEF JEHANGIR MEHTA SHOOT
I was hired to shoot Chef...

CELEBRITY CHEF JEHANGIR MEHTA SHOOT

I was hired to shoot Chef Mehta in his restaurant on Duane Street in NYC. The shoot was for Scholastics Parent and Child Magazine.

Chef Mehta has started a series of hands-on classes for children 4 to 10, called Gastrokids. So working with kids was not that tough for him. As for me I have 3 kids ages 6, 6 and 7. So working with kids was just plain fun for me. The story was about kids and food and cooking. It was great fun since I love food, shooting food and kids. What could be better.

SMALL PEOPLE -SMALL SPACES
Shooting in restaurants always offer...

SMALL PEOPLE -SMALL SPACES

Shooting in restaurants always offer a challenge. Mehtaphor Restaurant 130 Duane Street
New York, NY 10013 - offered a special obstacle. It’s only about 9 - 10 ft wide and somewhat less with tables in place. We had to work quickly with young kids. Lighting was tough because there was only a few places to place lights, and gear. So we made do with what we had to work with. Not the same as working in my spacious studio. But I really enjoyed the challenge. It’s Great to go on location, deal with all kinds of unknowns and problem solve on the fly. Small Space - Small People - could be a recipe for disaster…But all the stars were aligned and we got many fun images..

When done with the kids we knocked out 4-5 food shots. A perfect day.

All and all, a really fun day. Great crew, great talent, great celebrity chef, and fun food to shoot and eat! Chef Mehta was great, warm, inviting and great with the kids… The crew was quick and efficient, and proficient… I love shooting in restaurants, always a challenge. Which makes for problem solving and fun, and great results.

Photo quote or the day: “Keep it simple.” - Alfred...

Photo quote or the day: “Keep it simple.” - Alfred Eisenstaedt

This gave the shoot a beautiful flowing feel. I took us closer to that fantasy feeling. On the left you see Sarabeth stopped, frozen in time and space. On the right Lizzy is moving thru time and space. I could not help myself, I added wings! She was the perfect fairy, fluttering around like Tinker bell. ( I’m sometimes influenced by my 6 and 7yr old daughters)

The use of the long exposure was just the trick I needed to get this shoot to the next level of fun!

The Lizzy Jagger shoot was a really fun. We had cart blanche....

The Lizzy Jagger shoot was a really fun. We had cart blanche. We started with a blank slate and built on and idea. Lots of prep - lots of fun. But this shoot morphed and changed as we shot. Because the backdrop was able to be back lit (see Bob hanging it) it gave a luminescence to the shot.

Lizzy Jagger was the subject of one my fantasy shoots. Lizzy was approached and asked what would be her fantasy shoot. “ Tatania, from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream” she said. So we went to work and created a set and a look we hoped she would like.. She did. The backdrop from Broderson Backdrops, was the perfect. The dress was from Maggie Norris Courture. Perfect for our shoot into the past. I love Maggie’s designs. Cynthia Altoriso was the stylist. We work a lot together. Hair and Make up was done by Jerry Lopez.

We Also shoot lizzy’s friend Sarabeth Stroller, who graces the cover of Ellen Von Unwerth’s book ‘Fraulein” by Tashen.

Yes , my socks dried out in time for lunch. Alot.
I just dropped off three wet, cold and unhappy kids at school and I’m off to the studio. My waterproof Merrels don’t seem to be that waterproof.
I have my head down to avoid getting rain in my eyes… All of the sudden the wet and the cold are fading from my consciousness and I start seeing all things wet. Water - glorious water!
Its every where. Puddles, pouring off rooftops, cars splashing in pot holes, drain pipes, and rivers of water running everywhere. It was magical. What a visual delight! No strobe lights, cutters and computer monitors. No models, stylists, or assistants… just me, and my insane need to see and capture what I see.
I was in Heaven. Just me and my iphone. Only camera I had available.Time just for me to create, visualize with out the aid of the studio. Very cathartic. It was like gold to a prospector. It is truly as much about the process as it is the results.
I had a blast shooting - I saw so much, and wanted to share the joy that I experienced… this is just a few shots that i really liked. And NO I did not retouch anything. When I got to the studio, I took of my wet waterproof Merrels, and hung my soggy socks on the steam radiator and started my day.

Now this was a fun shoot! Susie Essman ! – Most commonly know from HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm _ in case you have not heard of it …..(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY9uvy4d318&feature=related )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=892ZP4v5bo4&feature=relmfu

Susie started in standup comedy, but is brilliant in front of a camera.
I collaborated on this shoot with stylist, and producer Cynthia Altoriso.
In getting ready for the shoot Sergey Logvinov, the hair and make up, and Susie chatted away about their Russian roots. As we began to light the set – I wanted it to be theatrical, and dramatic. I need to light it so that Susie could move over a large section of the set with consistent lighting results – I had Coty, my assistant use a follow light which was quite a challenge cause she could sure move on that set. With the right combination of lights we did just that. I love the lighting part of the shoot… it’s what makes it all come alive. And it was a lively shoot!
Susie’s character was chosen for our shoot to be Katherine, from Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. Her role in Curb Your Enthusiasm is that of a modern day shrew… Ok… well, she never quite gets tamed in Curb Your Enthusiasm…Well, she played the part on my set to the tee. She dug into her role as Susie Green and used it to act the part of the shrew… she was great, easy to direct, she took the role and ran with it …

I was a bit nervous at the start of the shoot, her being famous and me, well…not. But she was so great to work with, calm, professional and really funny. I knew it was going to go well when she looked at me on set and said in a loud voice, her signature phrase, “Fuck You David!” – I had landed, I was in the same class as Larry David! The rest of the shoot went like “butter”.

Details, details, lots of details…

Details, details, lots of details…
